i shall discuss chicken rice! =) now, chicken rice is practically a national dish in singapore and should really be marketed all over the world as a dish that you come to singapore for! when one speaks of chicken rice, what KIND of chicken rice is one referring to? with the many types of chicken rice available, i shall say that chicken rice is usually pieces of chicken that were once part of an entire chicken that was boiled in a stock with some other ingredients served on flavoured rice [rice that was boiled with stock and usually garlic, ginger and pandan] with a sprinkling of sauce made from chicken oil, soya sauce and other deliciously complementary things.it is also usually served with cucumber and/or tomato slices and chili, ginger paste and black sauce.however, considering the many kinds of chicken rice that have evolved over the years, i may safely say that hainanese chicken rice is still the one people refer to most of the time.
hainanese chicken rice is as i described above but other kinds of chicken rice exist like, roast chicken rice, soya sauce chicken rice and malay style chicken rice where the chicken is fried.the variations are endless and all are delicious.no wonder everyone loves chicken rice.it is universally appealing because of the fragrant rice, the juicy chicken pieces, the flavourful sauce and of course, it is, hopefully, balanced out with some cucumber and tomato slices.it is not terribly expensive and is fairly easy to obtain since practically every food center in this country has at least one chicken rice stall.
some negative comments about chicken rice however, is the amount of OIL that is present in the rice, chicken and sauce.even the minced up ginger is usually fried in some oil to give it more flavour.consdering the amount of saturated fat there is in chicken oil and fat, shouldn't we be avoiding this? not to mention the miniscule amount of vegetable provided with this substantial meal.it is also fairly unhealthy to be consuming such a large portion of white rice when many nutritionists now recommend brown rice and other kinds of fiber-rich foods.however, for taste and satisfaction alone, i think i'll forgo all these health issues and just chow down.
now that my chicken rice frenzy is over..i shall move on to another piece of useful information if you should ever be searching for raisin bread! =) my favourite is at sun moulin, the fresh milk raisin twist is delicious and come in packs of three for maximum satisfaction! bet you can't stop at one! =) considering their size and yummy-ness, they cost only a dollar apiece, $3 per pack.[they only come in packs of three] i buy them from the isetan basement branch of sun moulin as i haven't really found any other place with this particular bakery.the main attraction for me is the bread itself.it has risen well and has a chewy but light texture.the bread is also slightly sweet but not overpoweringly so.the raisins embedded within the twist provide a glorious scent to the bread itself and lend a sweetness to the mouthful.the bread looks very appealing as it is fat and browned to perfection.[i'm sure its an egg wash or something of that sort that allows it to brown to such marvellousness] so! get these yummy fresh milk raisin twists at sun moulin at isetan scotts basement.be warned, they sell out fast and sometimes, they even run out of them!! =( that is a tragic TRAGIC moment.
